Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has confirmed that citizens of 52 countries, including Japan, will be allowed to enter Russia will electronic visas starting early 2021. Currently travelers arriving from 5 airports in the Far East can enter the country with an e-visa, and the use of e-visas is beginning the spread around the Federation, but travel is limited to regions specified in visa applications. With this announcement, travelers will be able to move around the country with an e-visa, and the period of stay will be extended from 8 days to 14 days. Electronic visas will be issued for tourism, business, and humanitarian reasons, and the processing fee is 40 USD or free for children under 6. The policy takes effect in early 2021.

The government of Japan has made clear that it will soon begin to drastically relax its border protections aimed at preventing the inflow of the novel coronavirus. Japanese returning from overseas business trips will, under certain conditions, no longer be required to quarantine for two weeks. This is aimed at boosting economic recovery by making it easier to conduct overseas business travel. This marks the first steps in the government's policy toward easing refusals of entry and recommendations to cancel travel plans, which began in January of this year and have since expanded, to 12 countries in which infection rates have gone down, including China and Korea. Visas will continue to be restricted, so foreign tourists are not expected, but those entering the country from designated regions will not require testing.
