Nick Palfreyman

Nick Palfreyman (University of Central Lancashire)

Nick Palfreyman is a deaf academic working in the fields of linguistics, sociolinguistics and international development. He has worked with the Indonesian deaf community since 2007, and is particularly interested in Labovian and third-wave sociolinguistics, sign language typology, applied linguistics, and corpus-informed sign language teaching. As co-Director of the iSLanDS Institute at the University of Central Lancashire, Nick has a strong record of working with deaf people in the global South to unlock the benefits of research.

Marie Coppola

Marie Coppola (University of Connecticut)

Marie is a cognitive scientist whose experience as a child of Deaf adults makes possible her work on homesign, language emergence, language acquisition, and cognitive development. At the University of Connecticut, she directs the Language Creation Laboratory, and is the Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation-funded Study of Language and Math. She has worked with deaf people in Nicaragua since 1994. She founded and chairs the non-profit organization, Signs and Smiles, which partners with and advocates for deaf communities in Nicaragua and internationally.

Kang Suk Byun

Kang Suk Byun (Kangnam University)

Kang Suk Byun is working as a researcher and teaching in the MA program at Kangnam University (Seoul). He is completing his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, NL) and is interested in interaction and pragmatics in cross-signing or International Sign. As an independent researcher, he is investigating the interaction of Korean Sign Language (KSL) used in South Korea. Kang Suk Byun is currently participating in the Korean Sign Language Corpus Project as a researcher, and he is also on the research team preparing the KSL national proficiency exam which is to be launched in the near future.

Dr. Yaqing Chen

Yaqing Chen (Shanghai Normal University)

Dr. Yaqing Chen is based in the Centre for Chinese Sign Language (CSL) and Deaf Studies at Shanghai Normal University, China. She completed a Ph. D. in Linguistics at Fudan University in 2019. She is interested in sign variation and has conducted investigations into lexical variation in CSL used in mainland China.

Raphael Vergel de Dios (Rafa) Domingo

Raphael Vergel de Dios (Rafa) Domingo (Gallaudet University)

Raphael Vergel de Dios (Rafa) Domingo is currently working on his Ph.D. in Linguistics at Gallaudet University. He is Head of Deaf Heritage and Filipino Sign Language Studies at the Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (Manila, Philippines). Rafa is one of the Gallaudet-World Deaf Leadership Scholarship Program recipients. He is also co-founder and first president of the Philippine Federation of the Deaf and has been actively involved in Filipino Sign Language research, Deaf education, and human rights advocacy since 1995. Rafa’s research interests are sign language documentation, syntax, linguistic ethnography, Deaf education, and human rights.

Uiko Yano (Kwansei Gakuin University Sign Language Research Center)

Uiko Yano (Kwansei Gakuin University Sign Language Research Center)

Uiko Yano is currently a visiting researcher at the Sign Language Research Center, Kwansei Gakuin University and is engaged in research on the corpus of sign language of deaf people who are not in school or who live in remote islands. A native of Oshima Island in Ehime Prefecture, she became interested in a variety of sign languages through the Miyakubo Sign Language, which was used in her local area, and has been conducting research on shared sign languages, such as Miyakubo Sign Language. She won the Best Presentation Award of the 158th Meeting of the Linguistic Society of Japan, and graduated with M.A. from the Division of Information and Communication Accessibility, Graduate School of Technology and Science at the Tsukuba University of Technology.

Nick Palfreyman

Nick Palfreyman (セントラル・ランカシャー大学)

言語学、社会言語学、国際開発の分野で活躍するろうの研究者であり、2007年からはインドネシアのろう者コミュニティとも活動している。 特にラボフや第三波の社会言語学、手話言語類型論、応用言語学、コーパスを用いた手話教育に関心を持つ。 セントラル・ランカシャー大学国際手話・ろう学(iSLanDS)研究所の共同所長として、グローバル・サウスのろう者と協力し研究成果を発揮してきた実績がある。

Marie Coppola

Marie Coppola (コネチカット大学)

認知科学者。 CODAとしての経験を基に、ホームサイン、言語の発生、言語習得、認知的発達について研究している。コネチカット大学言語創造研究所(Language Creation Laboratory)所長、アメリカ国立科学財団助成 「言語と数学の研究(Study of Language and Math)」研究代表者を務める。 1994年よりニカラグアにてろう者とともに活動。NPO 「サインズ・アンド・スマイルズ(Signs and Smiles)」を創設・主宰し、ニカラグアおよび世界のろうコミュニティと連携している。

Kang Suk Byun

Kang Suk Byun (江南大学校)

江南大学校(ソウル)修士課程の教員・研究員。マックス・プランク心理言語学研究所(オランダ・ナイメーヘン)の博士過程に在学中で、横断手話や国際手話のインタラクション、語用論に興味を持つ。 現在の研究テーマとしては、韓国で使われる韓国手話(KSL)のインタラクションを研究している。 また、韓国手話コーパス・プロジェクトに参加しているほか、近々運用開始予定の韓国手話能力検定試験の作成を行う研究チームにも参画中。

Dr. Yaqing Chen

Yaqing Chen (上海大学)

中国、上海大学中国手話(CSL)・ろう学研究センターに所属。 2019年に復旦大学にて博士の学位(言語学) を取得。 手話のバリエーションに興味を持っており、中国本土における中国手話の語彙のバリエーションについても調査を行っている。

ギャローデット大学の博士課程(言語学)に在学中。 フィリピン・マニラのデラサール大学聖ベニルデ校、ろう教育推進センターにて、ろう史・フィリピン手話研究の代表を務める。 ギャローデット大学 - 世界ろう者リーダーシップ奨学金プログラムの受賞者。フィリピンろう者連盟の共同創立者であり初代会長でもある。 1995年からフィリピン手話研究、ろう教育、人権保護活動に積極的に携わる。研究領域は手話のドキュメンテーション、統語論、言語民族誌、ろう教育、人権。

矢野羽衣子

矢野羽衣子 (関西学院大学手話言語研究センター)

関西学院大学手話言語研究センターにて客員研究員として不就学ろう者や離島で生活するろう者の手話表現コーパスについて研究中。 愛媛県大島出身で、地元で使われている宮窪手話を通して様々な手話言語に興味を持ち、宮窪手話をはじめとする共有手話などの研究も行っている。 第158回日本言語学会発表賞受賞。国立大学法人筑波技術大学大学院技術科学研究科 情報アクセシビリティ専攻修士過程修了。
