さっぽろバイオクラスター構想``Bio-Sの取り組み

Our goal at Bio-S is to implement, through the power of internationally competitive science, the establishment of a foundation that will allow health sciences industries to take root in Hokkaido.Since its launch in 2007, the Bio-S project has promoted research on characteristic functional evaluation in the three fields of metabolic, immune and cognitive function, which deteriorates with age and lifestyle changes. It has promoted the evaluation of various food and food ingredients and made progress in efforts to identify biomarkers that indicate related disease processes. Building research hubs for food innovation.Globalization strategy: Building the Sapporo-based R & D hub of functional foods for East Asia and pursuing extensively complementary alliance.Human resource development strategy: Development of food science adviser versed in Hokkaido health foods and clinical research coordinators for functional foods in Bio-S Food Science College.


抗酸化機能分析研究センター構築とその取り組み

Anti-oxidant activity is defined as the value of oxygen radical activity suppression. Many reports suggest that oxygen radicals are able to cause cancer and quicken aging and metabolic syndromes. In general, scientists suppose that food materials containing anti-oxidant activity inhibit injury by oxygen radicals, therefore having an effective role in the prevention and therapy against diseases.``The Research Center of Anti-Oxidant Activity Analyses" was established as a part of the Bio-S project in Asahikawa Medical University to evaluate anti-oxidant activity in Hokkaido's plants and natural products. The center is utilized as an analysis center, for the promotion and development of Hokkaido Food Industry and Science. The center has made a data base from the analytical results and a sample library of polyphenol antioxidant materials, and information from the center will be released not only in Hokkaido, but in Japan and to the entire world. Since 2009, we have mainly focused on analyzing the polyphenol antioxidants in berries for wine and beans that are cultivated in Hokkaido. By 2011, we have a plan to complete the anti-oxidant activity data base and sample library for 500-600 of Hokkaido's plants which covers much of the food eaten in the area.


ユニークな分析技術に基づく高度脂質分析ラボの構築

Development of new testing methods for lipids and lipoproteins useful in prevention and treatment of lipid-related diseases is in progress in our laboratory, such as carbon nanotube sensor and monoclonal antibody for oxidized LDL, atomic-force microscope for lipoprotein particle sizes, and quantitative lipidomics for lipid peroxides and plasmalogens. On the basis of these unique technologies, we are constructing advanced lipid laboratory, which would provide analytical services to companies and researchers, commercial kits for lipid measurements, and also data interpretation and consultation services. This laboratory might be linked with similar laboratories in Japan and foreign countries and start joint business with them. To support this laboratory, funding from the government and companies is necessary. There should be a COE (center of excellence) program for higher lipid studies beside the advanced lipid laboratory, which will help the lab keep being the forerunner and provide human resource. 食材の臨床試験とその拠点作り

``Food and Health" is the major theme of the current research-oriented project, Knowledge Cluster Initiatives, Sapporo Bio-S. This project is uniquely designed to apply science-based outcomes of functional foods for the promotion of food business in Hokkaido. With cooperative work by all members, not only in agricultural and marine businesses, but also in the fields of medicine and nutrition, the goal is set to raise market values of agricultural and marine products originating in Hokkaido. To complete this goal, we have established the ``Clinical Trial System" in Ebetsu City located in central Hokkaido to evaluate the safety and functions of foods for human health. The system provides cost-effective and highly-qualified medical service. It is highly expected that this system will enhance the development of food science and economic activities in Hokkaido.


高齢社会の課題解決研究フィールドを目指するもいコホートピアの取り組み

Many developed countries face a rapid increase of aged people. The speed of aging is more than expected or scheduled, raising many issues in our life. On the other hand, rapid increase of aging people parallels decrease of new born babies, which results in decrease of working people and over all habitancy. Japan has become a leading country for the number of aged people and keeps the top rank of longest generation in the world. This directly links to the reduction of production of heavy industrial products and has suggested paradigm shift from old industrial country to a new style with sustainable life style. Since Japan is a leader for aging country, we have to solve issues in aging society by ourselves. We are requested for the solution in aging life, meaning that we have become a top runner in this particular situation. Many matters in the actual life have been optimized for virile ages and have hampered a sustainable life for aged people. Nonetheless, we have to change structures of our society for aged people. The issues with aged people may be a target for the innovation or, in other words, a new paradigm for the near future of human being. We have being trying to establish open field for geriatric science in Rumoi city, Hokkaido. In this brief paper, we introduce you a summary of our activity in Rumoi city. The concepts of Rumoi Cohortopia, a pet name of this activity, are1. Open filed for research in any field dealing with health.\\2. Local members of Rumoi Cohortopia guide to facilitate research in the City.3. Visit of Rumoi City to learn about ``what is Rumoi Cohortopia" is just welcome.


函館マリンバイオクラスター形成への取り組み

Natural, geographical, and historical advantages for fisheries and marine industries have collected various industries and prominent scientific institutions in the Hakodate area. Based on this character, the 'Hakodate International Fisheries and Ocean City Concept' commenced in 2003, in which the formation of an international scientific research city of fisheries and marine science was targeted. A number of projects developing scientific technologies into industrial advancement have since been implemented. Currently, we have a platform of industry-academia-government collaboration. To optimally exploit this foundation, we aim to form a sustainable marine bio industrial cluster through the global innovation of fisheries and marine science. In this innovation, we recognize the ocean as a huge and measurable production system, and develop total technologies in order to utilize valuable substances from marine bio-resources.In this project, we have the following four research-and-development themes:1. Improvement of the balance between an advanced use and sustainable use of biota and aquatic environment in the coastal region using marine spatial information 2. Autonomous' green bio-farming' of the northern mega-benthos containing high value added products 3. Research and development for creation of highly functional resources harnessing biological characteristics of mega-benthos 4. Research and development for establishment of global standards for food quality and health effects

世界的に見れば,バイオマス全体の中で“籾殻”はさほど大きな割合を占めないであろう.世界全体で見れば,木材チップやバガスが多い.ただし,東南アジアは先の1億トンの籾殻の大部分を排出するから,東南アジアにおいて籾殻は重要なバイオマスである.筆者は籾殻の利用に関して興味を持ってきたので,発電燃料としての籾殻の課題について考えてみたい.
