Optically active helical polymers with a controlled helix-sense have aroused considerable interest. Here the authors briefly describe the synthesis and function of helical polymers. One-handed helical conformation can be induced on optically inactive poly(phenylacetylene)s bearing various functional groups upon complexation with optically active small molecules through interactions with the polymer's functional group. The complexes show a characteristic induced circular dichroism in the UV-visible region. This concept of helicity induction on optically inactive polymers can be applicable to arrange desired molecules into a one-handed helical array along the polymer backbone, for instance, fullerenes (C60).
