Rare earth ion-doped materials show unique optical properties and, among them, rare earth phosphors are most widely used and played an important role for developing electric appliances for general illumination (fluorescent lamps), displays (CRT, LC (backlights), or plasma display panels), and so on (e.g. X-ray intensifying screen). However, Chinese government has enforced a political restriction to supply the rare earth elements to foreign countries and thus, the direct reuse and recycle processing for the phosphor scraps generated from the corresponding used appliances have been recently noted that the rare earth elements are used effectively to save the total consumption. In this part, the reuse and recycle processing for fluorescent lamps are reviewed based on a current status: 1) A leaching method using acid is effective to regenerate rare earth elements as raw materials for new production. On the other hand, the separation method based on the difference of the magnetic susceptibility of each phosphor can be used to recover individual phosphor from the phosphor mixture.
