This review deals with the preparation of highly effective titanium dioxide photocatalysts in controllable phase and microstructures. Well-shaped nanocrystalline TiO2 powders (less than 10nm) in the anatase, rutile, mixed-phase, and complete amorphous TiO2 with huge surface area were prepared by the hydrolysis of TiCl4 solution. Mesoporous TiO2 photocatalysts with crystalline framework were prepared by selectively dissolving of SiO2/TiO2 binary oxides. Also, a thermal decomposition approach was presented to prepare anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with high photocatalytic activity. The effects of amorphous TiO2 content, crystalline phase and particle size on the photocatalytic activity of nanosized TiO2 particles were investigated in the photocatalytic oxidation of phenol. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles in the rutile phase was size-dependent significantly in the photocatalytic degradation of phenol.
